Barbara Halnan Memorial Program Residency
In memory of the fight for women's place in the art world, specifically the 1978 Bondi Women's Art Festival Ros Cook, Veronica Laletin and Annie Minchin remember Barbara Halnan and her work in that festival, and Women Action Theatre.

The artist will move into the Articulate Project Space studio on October 18. The exhibition will take place during the period November 9-28. Opening date to be announced soon. Articulate also would like to thank the donors and members of the assessing panel, for their generosity and time which have made this residency possible.
The BHMP Residency celebrates the life of Barbara Halnan and is available to support the artistic endeavours of mature age female artists* who are not represented by a gallery.
The successful applicant will be identified primarily for her adherence to Barbara Halnan’s aesthetic concerns, the strengths of her proposal, her innovative take and the quality and relevance of her past work.
The residency will run over a period of approx. 6 weeks (18/10/2023 – 27/11/2023). There is currently one Residency on offer, with a second round planned for 2024.
The value of the residency is as follows:
Artist stipend: AUD2,000 (80% at the beginning of the residency; 20% immediately after the end of the residency).
Exclusive use of the Articulate Backroom (18/10/2023 - 6/112023) and the Ground Floor Exhibition Space (8/11/2023 – 27/11/2023)
Opening event (incl. catering) scheduled for the 4th week of the residency (date TBC).
Promotion of the event through social media and other outlets.
Accessibility: Articulate Project Space is accessible from the Parramatta Rd entrance – please note that current parking restrictions on Parramatta Rd indicate accessibility 10am-3pm weekdays, after 7pm, and all weekend). Access to the Back Room (located at the same level as Parramatta Rd) involves climbing 2 steps. Facilities (other than the kitchen) are located on the first floor of the building. The building has no lift.
*Artists who identify as female and are above 50 years of age, and not represented by a gallery.

Barbara Halnan described herself as an artist, painter and installation artist - her interests were art, music and reading. She was a dedicated artist and for many she was a friend and colleague. As an artist Barbara was knowledgeable, unpretentious, friendly, self-sufficient and hard working. She went about making art with determination and she needed no prompting to achieve it. Barbara made an impression on everyone who met her in Australia and other countries.
