'Out of Kilter', timber and acrylic paint, 42 x 30.5 cm, 2025

This work takes a perfect circle, symbolic of unity, and disrupts it. The circle is cut, pushed and dislodged but still hangs on. Simple geometry is used to describe the emotional state of being 'out of kilter' or off balance. Hopefully there is some resolution however through colour and form, to find a sense of balance and cohesion despite the disruption.
Sarah Fitzgerald is a Sydney based artist with a Master of in Fine Arts from the National Art School in Sydney and a degree in Architecture from the University of Sydney. She is interested in contemporary issues of place and identity and the role different types of structures, such as language, geometry, architecture, and urbanization, affect the way we live and communicate with each other. Through her art practice she explores the interface between art and architecture and how these two disciplines reflect the way we construct and occupy space.
