Probable Conclusion (with slight disruption), I and II.

These two paintings hung in my studio for several years, not quite ready to be brought out, not quite ready to be put away, never quite finished.

(When IS a painting finished? How does one know?)

Beginning as a playful process-and-material exploration (and to use up some left-over paint), the paintings examine repetition of form, variation of interval and tension between colours.

Recently, as I was adding more horizontals in an attempt to reach the elusive destination of ‘finished’, the paint became uncooperative. I tried rubbing back to remove it, but the new paint refused to budge without destroying the years-old layers underneath. A slight disruption.

The paintings tell a story of time, the process of their making, and (I hope) a certain joyful, energetic sentiment.

Are they finished?
What do they mean?

I’m not sure.
Jan Handel has a particular interest in the modernist grid and colour interactions through layering. She seeks an unlikely cohesion between gesture and hard-edge abstraction to give form to circumstances inherent in human experience. She continually returns to themes of order and the idea that known boundaries allow greater freedom.
