The painting 'Eel Place River Light' refers to a specific location on Earth, the Parramatta River in NSW, Australia. Informed by its history, colours, textures, shapes and movement, the work captures the vibrant light and energy of the river and its surroundings. From the radiant flora and fauna embracing the river banks, to the silky whispering waves, and on to the play of wind on the water surface reflecting the glowing sky or the glittering city lights, the painting highlights the value of observation, appreciation, and deeper understanding of the natural world, whilst emphasising the importance of respect and preservation of a precious and unique environment. Water and sediment from the actual river were integrated into the process of making, forging a physical link between the artwork and the site from which it was inspired.
Artist profile
My work investigates different modalities in which information about the world and the universe is translated into contemporary works of art, as a continuum of an artistic tradition nascent in 18th-century Romanticism. Through a range of media including painting, drawing, digital video, and clay, my studio practice focuses on modes of making the unseen visible, presenting the unpresentable, and the connections between imagination and reality.
