Black Square, Red Square, and White on White
.
Materials: upholstery vinyl; Dimensions: 3 x (250 x 250 x 50mm), Year: 2024
The work, a triptych, draws on Malevich’s works by similar names: Black Square (1915), Red Square (1915) and White on White (1917-8). Founder of the Suprematist Movement, Malevich sought to empty out meaning, instead, using colour to invoke a transcendent state. Each of these squares sat on a white ground.
The work I’ve created for the current show draws on the work of Malevich but queries the extent to which meaning can ever be truly emptied out. I’ve created three 3 dimensional shapes upholstered in vinyl with a white trim (the latter a nod to Malevich’s white ground). The shapes reference a stool seat which might be found in the 50’s when Modernism was absorbed into the mainstream and became a hallmark for contemporary architecture, and its contents.

Sue Callanan creates sculptural installations and objects which are responsive to their site- the architecture and its surrounds, including the social function or historical context of the space. They are designed to create a bodily awareness of the space through which we move.
