Returns captures a shared meal – a common experience although something seems out of sort. It embodies the natural flow of the coming together and drifting apart of all human relations. The placement of the guests at the table may seem familiar at times. It is symbolic of significant encounters around food on special occasions, and of the long periods of separation that often follow. The last supper at the end of a holiday, the shared meal at the end of a theatre production, the leaving do for a cherished colleague … Even when everybody has left, the bonds remain solid and nobody is alone. Even when we are together we remain, somehow, apart.
