Anne Zahalka (b.1957) is one of Australia’s leading media artists, known for reimagining iconic imagery to challenge ideas of identity, culture, and the environment. She has exhibited nationally and internationally for more than four decades. Her art blends wit, intelligence, and accessibility. Drawing on appropriation and the subversion of art-historical motifs, Zahalka re-stages historic portraits and photographs to tell alternative narratives — from interrogating colonial imagery to weaving in her own family’s migrant history.
In recent years, her focus has shifted toward ecology. She transforms natural history dioramas to reflect on society’s evolving relationship with nature and considers how our interactions shape both the present environment and what we leave for future generations.
