My Best Artwork
.
live plant, rubber, wire; dimensions variable2019-2024
Should a visitor enter my studio, they will immediately spot a sprawling succulent. ‘My best artwork’, I say, tongue in cheek. Every other artwork is dismantled, invisible. The plant continues in all climes- whether I neglect it (sometimes for weeks on end), or not. It likes its sunny spot at Articulate. I took it home during Covid and it didn’t do well - it turns out my Best Artwork is ‘site specific’.
I’ve made a maquette to emulate it, reversing the traditional practice of maquette followed by artwork. In so doing, I turn attention to the conceit of an artwork. ‘Nature’, after all, stands on its own, apart from gracing its architectural interiors.
So, in this instance, I honour the act, or ‘process’ of growth (nature) that defies my humble attempts to imitate it, in the form of a maquette.

Sue Callanan creates sculptural installations and objects which are responsive to their site- the architecture and its surrounds, including the social function or historical context of the space.
They are designed to create a bodily awareness of the space through which we move.
