Mrs Hudson
.
2025 HD video,1:1, 4:38 mins; analogue photography, digital video, audio (Edition of 8)
An in-camera, double-exposed black and white film negative, is melded with digital video and audio to portray Mrs Hudson, whose name is scribed in the historic Rylstone Police Gazette as an alias of the female bushranger Jessie Hickman (1892-1936). Seeking to unearth the elusive Hickman, Julie Visible captured still and moving imagery while venturing in the isolated bushland of the Wollemi region; collecting and reassembling fragments, traces and murmurs of Hickman’s life.
Memory and time shift as the wind animates the motion of a midwinter shadow from the old Myrtle Creek windmill in the Widden Valley. This mysterious, shadowy ruff cycles forward then back with the change of the wind around Mrs Hudson’s head and shoulders; while the strained audio of the windmill mechanisms squeal and groan from deep within the confines of the well. This work elicits impressions and lingering apparitions from within the lightness and darkness of the bushland known to be frequented by Hickman in the early 1900s.
