Square Logic

Cornelis Timmer

Upstairs  | Opens on Sep 5 until Sep 27 | Fri, Sat & Sun

In a world of fragmentation and dissonance, my geometric abstractions seek order within turmoil—translating the turbulence of lived experience into meditative compositions of balance and rhythm.
The Logic of the Square is a body of work exploring the enduring power of the square as both a geometric and philosophical construct. Each painting investigates how the square—pure, stable, and balanced—can act as a vessel for colour, proportion, and spatial tension. Through systematic reduction and compositional precision, the series seeks to distil visual experience to its most essential form, where harmony and disruption coexist.
The exhibition examines the square not merely as a shape, but as a framework for thinking: a site of order, rhythm, and potential transcendence. The repetition of the form becomes a meditative process, a dialogue between control and intuition, rationality and emotion.
Drawing on the legacy of geometric abstraction and movements such as De Stijl, Bauhaus, and Minimalism, the works reference artists like Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, and Josef Albers, while maintaining a contemporary sensibility.
Where De Stijl pursued universal harmony through geometry and primary colour, this exhibition reinterprets those ideals for a contemporary context—focusing on reduction, subtle shifts in tone, and the materiality of paint. The square becomes a field for quiet contemplation rather than a purely utopian symbol.
The series employs a restrained visual language—precise edges, carefully modulated colour fields, and controlled spatial divisions.
Key elements include polychrome palettes to explore tonal resonance, layered geometric systems based on proportion and balance and subtle variations in texture and opacity to reveal the hand within the system.
The repetition of the square across the series allows for a study of infinite variation within constraint—a reflection of both modernist ideals and contemporary concerns with systems, order, and perception.
