Split captures the moment when an urban or architectural piazza dissolves into abstract space. It evokes the utopian ideals of Russian Constructivism, while its materiality reminds us that this is paint—and acknowledges that the dream of radical abstraction requires a critical distance. Laurence Kimmel’s artistic exploration of Portals and Threshold Spaces unfolds at the scale of the urban landscape.
String Figures draws on the enduring use of this technique as a form of communication across cultures. Here, the string is interrupted and partially concealed, yet the spatial gesture of the loop persists. As in Split, the painting technique serves to evoke spaces of varying depth.
Laurence Kimmel is an architect, an author, a curator and an artist living on Wangal land/Concord, Australia. She is using oil painting to express architectural visions of Threshold spaces and liminal spaces. Her work on abstract landscapes, topologies and interconnections of spaces is enhanced by contrasted materialities, gradients and lines that are perceived as ‘cuts’ between spaces.
She published a book in 2021 entitled ‘Architecture of Threshold Spaces’ (Routledge, London). She is currently teaching Architecture and Design at the University of Sydney, UNSW and University of Western Sydney.
