Surface Trace #11 is part of an ongoing series that explores the intersection between human-made systems and the organic imprints of the natural world. These works investigate visual parallels between maps, networks, and structural systems, alongside the seemingly random yet deeply patterned marks left by environmental forces on built surfaces. Through this dialogue, the work reflects on the systemisation of human existence—physiological, intellectual, and geo-physical—while drawing attention to the tension between order and entropy.
My practice interrogates form, colour, surface, structure, repetition, and spatial tension. I am interested in how these elements can evoke both the rigidity of human systems and the fluidity of natural processes. The layering of marks, textures, and materials becomes a way to trace the passage of time, movement, and memory—both human and environmental. In the Surface Trace series, the surface becomes a site of convergence, where the planned and the accidental coexist. These works reveal the quiet negotiations between control and chaos, permanence and impermanence, and invite viewers to consider the subtle interplay between the constructed and the organic in our everyday environments.
Artist and curator Lisa Jones' practice explores urban environments and human interaction through layered works that trace hidden networks and reconcile everyday chaos with structure. Jones has exhibited nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions across institutional, artist-run, and commercial spaces. She holds MFAs from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Sydney College of the Arts. Her work is held in major collections and has received support including the Australia Council Emerging Artist New Works Grant. Lisa Jones lives and works on Gadigal land (Sydney, Australia).
