Aged backing tapes, acrylic medium, 790 x 600 mm, 2025
Weaving with tapes continues a practice of conflating textile traditions with other artmaking techniques and art historical discourse. Usually unseen, backing tapes materially supported art. Salvaged at the point of conservation, their re-presentation as the front prompts a broader consideration about support for art, artists and art as work. These aged backing tapes wear the marks of time and function – torn, punctured, spotted, stained, and degraded to the point of obsolescence, they are now seen, as they have become the artwork itself. Alongside the marks of failing support are those of care and repair in a weaving together of elements as well as narrative.
Lisa is a Borneo born artist, writer and curator living and working in Sydney. She has exhibited in Australia, Japan, Europe and USA and has a particular interest in non-objective drawing and painting, textiles, and alternative art platforms. Her practice is driven by a fascination with materials and their potential to hold metaphor and convey narrative.
