Tom Loveday, The Golden Origin of the World, acrylic on birch panel, 30 x 30 cm, 2025
L'Origine du Monde by Gustav Corbet ambiguously crosses various lines between art and pornography. It is a precise rendering of a women's pubic parts and would no doubt be cancelled if it were made by a more recent and less well known artist and exhibited in Sydney. In order to test the artworld's reception of of such images, I have made an abstraction to ironically reduce its pornographic quality. But oddly enough and here is the irony, such a reduction seems to both reduce its representational quality at the same time as making the image even more pornographic. Gold is used to emphasise the surface value of the work.
