“Upland” is an interpretation of the natural world. It explores the reiteration of reductive, elemental motifs using flat planes of colour to depict landscape; not in any conventional realistic manner, but to apply the visual language of hard edge abstraction based on organic and geometric forms (developed in the artist’s previous work). Its aim is to gaze towards to a world beyond ordinary appearances.
Helen Shields is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist living and working on Gundungurra and Darug lands in the upper Blue Mountains of NSW, she holds qualifications in Chemistry, Fine Arts, Education and Design. Her practice explores the dynamics of colour and the reiteration of simplified organic motifs, encompassing Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Collage and Fabric Design.
