In the Red (DSM-IV)

Acrylic on canvas, 26 panels, total: 250 x 338 cm, 2023
The installation is a critique on the model of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). In the Red has no ‘text’, that is, it has no definitions and as such they become labels. Language is intimately tied up with issues of possession and power. In the Red also alludes to Iatrogenic poverty, a term used to describe impoverishment induced by medical care. While the handwritten list conveys an existential energy, human feeling and emotion; the relentless list of labels culminates in a disturbing symbol of psychic instability.
My research based practice consists of personal histories and universal issues framed by linguistics and semiotics. A big part of my approach is that of collecting, ordering, representing and re-contextualising the reading of objects and discourses. A recurring theme is how we see and understand our place in the world. Installation incorporating textile has become an increasingly important component in my practice.
