 Under stones: Nunc Dimittis

.

granite, letterpress on paper in book form, dimensions variable

Ultimately the earth claims us all whether it be as dust or ashes. It is always expedient to be aware of this, so that we are not tempted to make an overreach. However it is more than evident that as a species we have made the most appalling of all overreaches – climate change is our legacy. The earth is our progenitor, our only resource and we have misused it. Maybe the endgame will be marked by all becoming dust and ashes again.
Beneath these markers I have placed, using a very fragile material, the Nunc Dimitis which is the psalm of the evening, the psalm of farewell.

Artist profile

I have been a practicing artist, an educator and writer for a long time. I have exhibited nationally and internationally. I was educated at the National Art School, Sydney - Atelier 17, Paris, MFA College of Fine Arts, University of NSW.

My work focuses on issues pertaining to environment, cultural landscapes and land usage and is based philosophically on a study of Ecophenomenology. My work could be classified as Post-Minimalist in that it eliminates the descriptive, excludes the pictorial, narrative and the fictive, with a focus on essential form and the reductive. My work centres around a sense of loss. I work in sculpture, installation and print media.

2. Concept drawing for Under stones: Nunc Dimitis where the granite stones with the paper book like text will be made into a cairn like structure to be placed on the floor.
