Synthetic polymer on canvas, 59.5 cm x 42 cm x 3.5 cm, 2025
The painting Home is my artistic response to the iconic 1990 photograph Pale Blue Dot, captured by NASA’s Voyager 1 space probe. In that image, Earth appears as a faint blue speck set against the surrounding darkness of the infinite cosmos. Fragile and minuscule in the great immensity, Earth is also a miracle: a sanctuary of life, a true paradise in a cold and frightening universe, and humanity’s only home. In my painting, I’ve tried to reflect the overwhelming sense of awe and reverence I feel when contemplating this cosmic perspective, as well as my deep love for our mother planet. Home is both a reminder and a plea: to cherish what we have before it’s lost to the vast silence that surrounds us.
Maria Constantinescu is an Australian artist based in Sydney, NSW. Her work investigates different modalities in which information about the universe and our world is translated into contemporary works of art, as a continuum of an artistic tradition nascent in 18th-century Romanticism. Through a range of media including painting, drawing, digital video, and clay, Constantinescu’s studio practice focuses on modes of making the unseen visible, presenting the unpresentable, and the connections between imagination and reality.
