 The uncertain light of afternoons

.

 Video, 1.46min, 2025

This video imagines the unnameable fears of childhood when you are alone at home, shadows creep up to windows, palpable silence surrounds you and a ray of afternoon sunlight breaks through clouds and creates a strange pattern on the wall…
A line in a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke evoked a childhood nightmare in which the familiar and comforting became scary:
“And reflected on the faded wallpaper now, the uncertain light of childhood afternoons when you were so afraid.”
The setting of the work is inspired by the many novels I read when I was young which were set in mansions where the houses themselves became a character in the plot.
