KENDAL HEYES

 Face in a crowd.

.

Pyrography on watercolour paper, 40x40cm, 2025

This work came out of experiments using a laser-cutting machine like a printer to burn images into 425gsm watercolour paper.
It’s a pyrographic work that combines photography, digital manipulation and printmaking in its processes.
I’m interested in the effect of a half-tone image where the dots are large enough so the image breaks down when seen up close, and resolves as the viewer moves away. The image changes with the changing position of the viewer.
Also the half-tone dot effect brings its own signifying effects and metaphors. The effect of zooming in to single out a face in the crowd, is that the face is at the same time individualised and made almost unrecognisable.
My practice covers a range of mediums. I often work with combinations of processes, incorporating contemporary digital techniques with more traditional approaches to image-making.
