Exile is a fundamental part of the history of the Australian continent. The traumatic exile of Australia’s Aboriginal Peoples coincided with the exile of colonisers and convicts. As a group of artists, we thought that it is important to tackle these stories and their impact on society, through individual trajectories.
The Architecture of Exile exhibition features work of artists whose life and practice are affected by stories of Exile. All from different cultural backgrounds, the works are resonances of these singular stories. Whether having experienced exile themselves, or having a heritage of exile in their family, they all have a way of making art that is underpinned by this heritage.
This exhibition shows how art can be an uplifting practice. Through this exhibition, I let each artist express differently how constructive and creative practice can transform the exilic conditions How can Exile be inhabited creatively rather than merely endured? The exhibition explores the theme of Exile through the transformative capacities of Art and Architecture, and investigates how spatial settings can embody, and counteract, the conditions of Exile. Artists engage meaningfully with structures and spaces, thus engaging critically with the emotional dimensions of Exile.
Architecture of Exile challenges conceptions of architecture as a stable guarantor of belonging or shelter. Instead, architecture can be understood as a practice that negotiates grounding: one that considers dwelling not as permanence or closure, but as a fragile, relational environment attuned to human finitude, embracing movement and duration. Architecture thus becomes a host for the exile’s ongoing search for orientation within an inherently unsettled world.
I invite you to read white leaflets to ‘listen to the voice’ of each artist.
