Disregular Blue

Ciara Turnbull

Upstairs  | Opens on Mar 4 until Mar 19 | Thurs, Fri, Sat & Sun

Difficulties arise when attempting to understand the self as a whole. We are a tangled ball of our experiences, our memories, our physicalities and our opinions. It feels arduous to try to untangle this ball, and instead of pulling at the threads, we can choose to capture it.
Impulsive mark making is a sincere expression of self. When a child picks up a pencil for the first time, they scribble. Scribbles are, by nature, nebulous. They represent everything and nothing. Scribbles are immediate; they’re a reaction to the now. There may be informal intention, however this is mostly overruled by the act of the mark. Each scribble is ultimately a direct result of everything. It encapsulates what you feel, every bias you hold and every inch of your self. The simple act has now become your signature.

We all are unfathomable tangles of marks. This series examines the disjointed relationships one can have with their own body and idea of self, and the cacophonous feelings this evokes.
